University Park is a neighborhood of charming single-family homes just north of the University of Florida’s flagship campus in Gainesville, FL. It is bounded by bustling NW 13th Street to the east and leafy NW 8th Ave to the north. Hogtown Creek and surrounding greenery forms the western boundary.
The neighborhood is within easy walking and biking distance to work, libraries, museums, concerts, Gator sports at Ben Griffin Stadium, restaurants, and places of worship. Being one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, University Park’s walkable streets enjoy a lush tree canopy that helps keep residents cool during the summer months.

What’s It Like Living in University Park?
University Park borders Florida Park to the north and Palm Terrace/Shands Woods to the west, neighborhoods with a character and building type similar to University Park. Florida Park is known for its architect-designed homes set into the thick hardwood hammock. The houses in Shands Woods and along 23rd Street are among the largest single-family homes in Gainesville built before 1975. The homes of Palm Terrace are mostly bungalows surrounded by majestic oaks.
History
University Park’s first plat was recorded in 1922. Home building really got underway after World War II, when the neighborhood expanded west of campus to accommodate UF’s growing administrative and professional classes. Over the years, many Presidents of the University of Florida and other prominent folks have called University Park home, lending the neighborhood prestige.
Public Schools Zoned for University
University Park is home to the highly regarded Parker Elementary School. Attracting families from around the world to its English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program, the school serves a diverse student population.
TheUniversity Park Neighborhood Associationwas formed in 1980 to preserve and protect this beloved collection of single-family neighborhoods, including Florida Park and Palm Terrace/Shands Woods. The active group organizes annual spring and fall picnics and potlucks that bring neighbors together. The group is also working with town and university officials to ensure University Park remains a peaceful, quiet place to live.
