It’s a well-known fact at this point that Gainesville has a thriving arts scene, just one stroll through downtown will show you crafty bodegas, record stores, music venues, coffee shops, and art. There are colossal murals sprawled through downtown Gainesville as a part of the project 352Walls, as well as commissioned works and street art. You don’t have to go to Artwalk on a Friday night to experience the culture, just visit 352walls.org and look at their map to discover hidden gems.

The best way to spend a Sunday morning in Gainesville is to bike around town and Mural hunt. 352 Walls definitely doesn’t capture everything on the map, but biking anywhere from Ward’s Supermarket to Depot Park you’ll be sure to see some butterflies, portraits, floral pieces, and abstract art.

Pro Tip: My favorite murals reside in the 2nd Ave parking garage, which has turned into an artful oasis due to contributions from artists from all over Gainesville

34th Street Wall
This is the best last minute costume idea of all time. All you need is a t-shirt you don’t care about, a marker, cardboard, and a printer. Print out a photo of the 34th street sign, attach it to a piece of cardboard and secure on a headband. If you don’t want to go that far, a green bandana tied in your hair with “34th Street” written on it will do. The rest of the costume is up to your friends, carry around some markers and encourage them to write some graffiti. (Just don’t be upset with what they write!)

Satchels Pizza Van
An icon in Gainesville culture, eating in the Satchels van is a rite of passage for any Gainesville resident. All you need for this costume is an all blue outfit, a “Satch Your Mouth” bumper sticker on your back pocket, and a VW logo affixed to a headband. Bonus points if you carry around a steering wheel or a slice of pizza. For extra style, try making a necklace or some earrings out of air fresheners. Beep Beep!

Couples Costume: DNA Bridge
This one is sure to make your friends groan. All you and your partner have to do is dress up monochromatically in red and blue outfits. When someone asks what you are, pretzel yourself around your partner to replicate the DNA bridge’s iconic architecture. Maybe add some glow sticks to look like this landmark at night!
(You might want to stretch out beforehand at a yoga class to attempt this costume. We recommend Sanctuary Yoga or Searchlight.)

“Some Were Quite Blind” - Statue Group Costume This is a strange one. If you’ve ever been on campus near the Animal Sciences area, you’ve surely seen several abstract silver structures emerging out of the grounds. This sculpture, titled, “Some Were Quite Blind,” actually represents the penile structures of four different mammals. It was erected on campus in 1988 by artist Carol K. Brown. With some tinfoil and silver clothes you’re sure to get some confused looks and maybe a couple of giggles at your next Halloween event.

10/27 - 10/28 Micanopy Fall Arts and Crafts Festival
This family friendly event takes us back to a simpler time in the heart of Micanopy; live music, artists, food, and vendors, will help us celebrate these new autumn breezes, or just the fact that the temperature has dipped below 85!

9/29 - 11/3 Torment Factory at North Central Florida YMCA
We can’t discuss the spookiest haunts in Gainesville without mentioning the newest destination for fright in town. Torment Factory features over 100 live actors, two haunted houses, scare zones, an escape room, a midway, as well as food and bar vendors. “Feast of Fear” is sure to scare even the most seasoned haunted house veterans.                                                                   

Clearly this isn’t everything happening in town for Halloween. Nearly every venue has its own calendar of events, and most volunteer groups also have exciting opportunities for involvement this season. This one is for parents of young children, before they hit the tween stage. O2BKids! offers a lot of great services and the Supercenter on Newberry has an amazing play area with a climbing wall! You can even do art projects or mini science experiments. This play area is open for general admission but your child can learn and play while getting the full suite of child care services and entertainment provided by the O2BKids! Facility.

Crafts at Home
If you’re trying to save a quick buck you can open up your pinterest dashboard and create something new right in your own home. If you’re not on pinterest, a quick google of “DIY Crafts” will show you articles with hundreds of ideas. You can make a bird feeder, lamp shades, paint, make jewelry, whatever you like! Crafting will occupy your mind until the rain has stopped.

Ceramic Painting
There are two locations in town that provide paint and ceramic trinkets or canvasses to paint on. Any time they’re open you can just walk in, pick something to paint and you’re good to go! Supporting these businesses has the added benefit of avoiding the clean up and possible permanent stains on your carpets and walls. Corks and Colors offers a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, bottomless mimosas and sometimes even make crepes! Painting with a Twist lets you BYOB and food, but provides cups, napkins and the like!

This one has created the biggest buzz amongst the millennials of Gainesville. Only a few months ago, our city got its very own trampoline park. Vertical trampolines, basketball courts, dodgeball area, and for those who need a bit more space individual trampolines. You can review your sick flips in the monitors placed around the facility. But first, you have to head over to their website and fill out an online waiver, safety first everyone!

Keeping with the bouncing theme Bouncin’ Big offers all the fun of a bounce house or bounce obstacle course but inside! This one also requires a waiver you can print right from their website. Any time they’re open you can take advantage of the open play area which holds some of your basic bounce houses. For any day that you don’t want to leave home, weather permitting, you can event rent a inflatable that can be brought to you!

Skating rink, trampolines, rock climbing wall, arcade games, bounce houses and other play areas are all available inside. When the weather clears up, you can take advantage of the go-karts as well. It seems like Skate Station has it all. It’s a one stop shop of non-stop fun. If your kids have been exhibiting a lot of extra energy lately, this is the place to go.

The Movies
Gainesville has two, soon to be three, movie theaters. One in Butler Plaza, one on Newberry road in the same plaza as Bento and Gator’s Dockside and the third one is being built in Celebration Pointe west of I-75 on Archer Road. For two or three hours, lose yourself in an action story or a Rom-Com, if that’s your thing. If you have a Regal Crown Club card then you can start receiving perks for being a frequent movie-watcher. Every 10 movies or so, you’ll earn a free movie ticket and between that you can get a small popcorn and other little gifts. If you really love movies and are beyond ready for all the hot summer flicks about to hit the box office then look into movie subscription programs. Moviepass is a popular one amongst Gainesvillians. With a $30 initial signup fee and $30 a month from then on you can watch one movie every 24 hours. Do the math, the deal is amazing!

Perfect brunch spot in this perfectly southern town. Probably the cheapest brunch I've ever had and it was tasty too! Mimosas were generous and only $1.95!!!! You can't beat that. Limerock is our go-to for a good burger in Haile Village. The waffle-cut chips or onion rings are a must try and they probably have to make gallons of Shack sauce daily to keep up with all the requests for extra. As Hannah gushed about, the price isn’t bad either. Outside seating is available for those gorgeous Florida days and a playground across the street to keep your tykes busy while the food is being prepared. The service is always friendly and you can count on Limerock for filling portions.

This little spot in Haile Market Square is great for a quick lunch. They have a multitude of “by the slice” options, in case you’re bringing a crowd with diverse tastes, and their garlic knots are absolutely to die for. If you’re not in the mood for pizza, they also offer a wide array of pasta dishes to sate your hunger.

Best sushi and best wait staff! Every time we come here we are guaranteed a delicious meal that is artfully served. Our waiter gives us amazing suggestions for the menu to help us choose the most delicious combinations. The customization and attention to detail that is provided by the Volcanic chefs is beyond 5 stars! All of the staff is incredible but my favorites are Walter and Tom for sure! I frequently visit with my family and we also meet with coworkers here. The chefs even surprised us with the 4 Audi rings drawn on our sushi platter one evening during an after hours work gathering since they know where we all work. Attention to detail, high quality sushi and great service is all on the menu at Volcanic Sushi!!

We know Gainesville is no stranger to sushi, but Haile’s version will always rank in the big leagues. As regulars, we found it was incredibly easy to get to know the staff, their fish is always very fresh and their presentation of the food is always on point. Located in the middle of Haile Village, Volcanic has brought good sushi within walking distance of Haile’s residents.

4. Loosey’s

Stopped by here on our way back to south Florida and all I can say is what a find! It's tucked away in a strip mall but once inside you don't feel like that. Well laid out and super clean. We sat at the bar, they had a nice local beer selection and pints were $4. They menu has a ton of selections to chose from. I decided on the dirty south chicken sandwich and the wife had the steak tacos. The sandwich arrived and I was in shock how big it was. The chicken was fried to perfection, crisp and super juicy. The bacon cooked perfect and the Dijon molasses tied it all together perfectly. Fries are hand cut and delicious. $10 sandwich was excellent. My wife's tacos were right behind. Steak was cooked medium rare and they were perfectly dressed. It says 2 bite tacos which I guess if you really tried you could eat them in 2 bites but why would you especially since they give you 5 of them. The food was excellent and the service was great. 5. Fresco’s

It was really really good.  Chicken dishes were fresh and well seasoned.  Pasta al dente and delicious. Thin crust pizza hot and flavorful.  Dinner salad with crisp fresh greens and the Italian and honey balsamic dressing were great.  This is going to be a great neighborhood spot.  Food tastes light and fresh. - Richard F., Gainesville, FL
Right across the street from the cutest corner in Haile is Fresco’s. This highly stylized location only opens for dinner but totally worth the wait. The portion sizes are huge and the service beyond friendly. They even do a little bit of catering!
