Gainesville’s music scene is unique, with the annual FEST every year we welcome punk and metalheads to overtake downtown for several days, on any given day you can find live bands performing folk and country, and of course, we can’t forget our beloved Tom Petty. Gainesville has been the breeding ground for contemporary musicians as well, including Hundred Waters, Less Than Jake, MSNRA, Flipturn, and The Forum. (http://bit.ly/thealligatorblog)

While all of this music is a part of the beloved Gainesville culture, there’s something quieter, a little less celebrated, but appreciated by all nonetheless - Jazz. In fact, Gainesville’s Jazz scene is so great that you can actually find live performances nearly every day of the week. We’ve rounded up our favorite spots below:

Though not often advertised, Downtown Wine and Cheese has one of the most picturesque Jazz nights in Gainesville. Get a glass, or bottle, of wine and one of their incredible charcuterie plates, then head to the patio to listen to talented musicians. Last time I attended I had the pleasure of watching an elderly man and his wife swing dance.

3.Florida Museum, First Magnitude beer launch May 17 supports Butterfly Conservation

The Florida Museum of Natural History and First Magnitude Brewing Co. will release a specialty beer called “Frosted Elfin New England-Style Pale Ale. May 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. to support butterfly conservation. The new beer highlights the rare Frosted Elfin butterfly. 4.Junior Ranger Jamboree

Come to Dudley Farm Historic State Park for a morning of Junior Ranger activities and fun! Participants will have the opportunity to:

– Complete 3 different “passport” activities

– Get sworn in as a Florida State Parks Junior Ranger

7.Cuban Ingenuity: The Artistry of the Everyday Inventor at the Cade Museum

Through videos, photographs, and objects collected for the Cade throughout Cuba, Cuban Ingenuity highlights the ingenious vision behind dozens of innovations and inventions of necessity. Manufactured products of the mid-20th century, from US automobiles to Soviet-made washing machines, have been repaired and amended, repurposed and redesigned over nearly three generations of Cubans. Objects pieced together for functionality have nonetheless achieved an artistic elegance worthy of this exhibition and appreciation.

8.Free Fridays Concert Series at Bo Diddley

7.New exhibit at Florida Museum

"Whale People: Protectors of the Sea,” is a unique experience featuring a more than 4,000-pound, hand-carved totem of a human riding a killer whale. A 90-foot video projection around the totem depicts these animals in the wild while artifacts from the Florida Museum’s Anthropology Division collections showcase their importance in Native American culture. 

When you live in Gainesville Florida, making a spiritual journey doesn’t have to involve uprooting your life or buying an airplane ticket to far off places; Alachua County isalready home to a diverse group of religious organizations offering unique and uplifting experiences just a short drive from home. One such local enlightenment ‘hot spot’ is the ‘A Nan Monastery and Buddhist Statue Park’. Built in 2010, the 'A Nan Monastery' is situated on a serene forested park in southeast Gainesville near the University of Florida and features a statue garden consisting of three large-scale Buddhist statues from Vietnam that were installed on the property in January 2017 and weigh a combined 85 tons. The massive statues represent  three different elements of Buddhist practice: the 28 foot-tall sitting Buddha statue symbolizes enlightenment and the escape of suffering; the 45 foot-tall statue 'Avalokitesvara' located in the center of the park is a representation of the goddess of compassion and healing, and the 33 foot-long reclining statue is a depiction of a sleeping Buddha and signifies his passing away. A monastery is an ideal place for tourists, Buddhists and students alike to visit for worship, to cultivate their spiritual lives and learn about Buddha's teachings. Located at 2120 SE 15th Street Gainesville, FL 32641, the monastery and statue garden are open people of any faith and origin and the monastery’s hours of operation are 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Sunday through Saturday.

1. Stop Single Use Plastic

Single-use plastic is the most wasteful and destructive use of resources. Taking anywhere from hundreds to thousands of years to decompose, every single piece of plastic that has ever been used still exists. That’s terrifying to think about. Switch to bamboo toothbrushes, invest in reusable containers, bring your water bottle everywhere, and simply say NO to single-use plastic. 2. Stop Buying Fast Fashion

Fast fashion is the secret evil that most middle-class Americans indulge in unconsciously. Americans actually dispose of 12.8 million tons of clothing annually. Try to invest in sustainable pieces, buy second hand, and for specific items you can usually find them unworn or gently used on apps like Poshmark and Threadup.

3. Ride Your Bike

Not only is it a great workout and a way to spend time outdoors, but biking is also a great way to cut down on your carbon emissions (and put less mileage on your car!)

4. Go Meatless

Pick at least one day a week to make an entirely meatless meal with your family. For an extra health kick, pick one day a week where you’re meatless the whole day - or even Vegan! For recipe ideas, minimalistbaker.com is a great place to start, with easy recipes with foods you’ll most likely already have on hand.

5. Don’t Package Your Produce

Did you know you don’t actually need all the plastic we use for produce at the grocery store? Buy reusable bags, shop at the farmers market, and when you’re grabbing 3 apples at the grocery store, just put them in your cart. No plastic required.

For an extra fun step, check your area for local U-Pick farms to show your kids where their food actually comes from.

6. Use Less Electricity

Using less is the easiest way to help the environment in every facet of consumption. With electricity, use less by only turning on the A/C or Heat when you actually need it. Invest in energy-friendly appliances (that will save you money in the long run.) Teach your children to unplug from their electronics and get outside, turn off the lights and fans when they leave a room, and don’t let the water run while they brush their teeth!

7. Try Composting

Food waste is a huge issue in contemporary culture. Creating a compost bin can help your garden, and give you a real idea of how much you throw into landfills.

8. Insulate Your Home

Save money on utilities by properly insulating your home, sealing cracks around the windows and doors, and keeping your roof maintained. Better insulation = lower energy consumption. Win-win!

9. Fix It

Have you ever heard of a tailor? Or god forbid, a sewing machine? Instead of throwing away your clothes when you have a small hole or missing button, take the time to repair it! Clothing takes up so much space in landfills, buying sustainable timeless pieces and taking care of them well is an easy and fun way to be green.

10. DIY

Taking the time to cook, (no take out containers), grow your own herbs (no shipping/packaging waste), and make your own home decor are some fun ways to help the Earth, your wallet, and grow as a human. 

Hopefully, these challenges inspire you to practice sustainability, and not just for one month. There is no Planet B! If everyone takes one small step, the Earth would be a much cleaner, healthier, happier place.

The 3rd Annual Great Gainesville Car Show is coming back! Come out on April 13th from 9 am to 2 pm, and enjoy the sights of vintage and modern cars. There will be music, trophies and prizes. The event is free for spectators! To register your car there is a $20 fee and a $10 fee for motorcycles to be paid at the event. Registration will be from 9 am to 11 am. All proceeds benefit the Noah’s Endeavor foundation.

3. Don-Ba 1st Annual African Diaspora Dance & Drum Festival!
Don-Ba means “grand celebration” in the African language of Djoula, and this festival embodies the essence of unity, heritage, joy, and art that an authentic “Don Ba” would bring to a village or community.

4. Howl at The Moon Benefit at High Dive

In early October of 2018, Hurricane Michael devastated the panhandle of Florida. The Cat 4 storm destroyed housing, roads, and one very special place in Chipley, Florida. The Seacrest Wolf Preserve is a volunteer-run facility that breeds and rehabilitates wolves in order to place them back into the eco-systems of various state parks around the nation. This facility is home to three packs of gray wolves and one pack of arctic wolves. It also houses a small animal rehab center for skunks, possums, foxes, bats, and other local wildlife.

The benefit will feature Burlesque, Live Music, and Drinks at the High Dive.

Presented by Florida Credit Union and The Gainesville Sun, the show will feature products and services related to home improvement, landscaping, remodeling, decorating and home sales. Some will say it can’t be done. Some will roll their eyes and claim they’ve tried but to no avail. However, I believe, in sales, you can almost always turn a no into a yes.

1. Don’t let “No” break your spirit.
An initial "no" could turn into a maybe or YES with the right sales pitch, so be prepared with a response that combats the "no." The important thing is to not take "no" personally; don't let the "no's" distract you from earning your next "yes." Sometimes, “no” really means “not right now” or even “I don’t know.”

2. “No” is not the end of the conversation
If a buyer or seller is in contact with you, they’re interested. “No” is not the end of the conversation, it’s a negation of that particular idea. Find out why your suggestion is being rejected, and how you can accommodate to suit their needs.

3. Find out what they really need
This is where knowing why you do what you do is important. What does this person need? What do they actually want? What do you have the power to do to get them closer to their goals?

4. Know your own worth.
We love Real Estate because we love putting people in homes, helping them make the biggest purchases of their lives, and helping them accomplish more than they ever thought possible. It's our job to help people make the right choice for their investment, and protect them from potential pitfalls. Knowing why we do what we do helps us help people, and turn “no” into “YES” all day long.
