Stick to these recommendations and you'll never have to step foot in a Starbucks again.
Before we dive in, we want to give a special thanks to everyone who supported these business and helped them weather the worst impacts of the pandemic, so they can continue providing us with places to meet, converse, hatch ideas, fall in love, nurse hangovers, and of course, enjoy great coffee!
Between the tall gates at the NW 6th Street entrance, the velociraptor guarding the parking lot and the colorfully painted old hippie bus parked in the back, the Curia complex makes an eclectic first impression. Inside, the cafe is carefully curated, cozy, and run by seasoned pros.
Being just off the beaten path of the university but still close to Downtown Gainseville, Curia attracts a lively mix of local professionals, students, hipsters, and families on weekend outings. The decor is inviting, artful, and always changing. Get there early in the morning to nab a coveted spot at one of the hand-hewn reclaimed wood bars. There's also plenty of outdoor seating, including picnic tables by the food truck.
Curia serves a variety of pastries with many vegan and gluten-free options. You can also grab a snack to go. The sweet rice pudding is one of our faves. There's a food truck parked out back in case you want a more substantial bite to eat. Regulars rave about the loaded tater tots. As with the cafe's baked goods, they offer plenty of vegan options.
The cafe anchors a cute little cluster of businesses that includes protocol gallery, AUK Market boutique, and Dad's Bar. We like to think of it as a mini-Portland, but with a decidedly Floridian flair.
In addition to the great coffee, friendly service and charming interior, what we love about Curia is the variety of people who come here. There's plenty of space to stretch out, so the loud talkers and the worker bees hunched over their laptops can all enjoy their coffee in peace and harmony.
Curia is an LGBTQ-friendly space. On the second Saturday of each month they host Drag Brunch, an afternoon of fabulous drag performances, vegan brunch and mimosas, all in the open air. Check their Facebook for upcoming events.
Patticakes motto is "connected people are the happiest". We couldn't agree more, which is why we stop in to say hi to our friends at Patticakes whenever we get the chance.
Located in the lovely Haile Village Center in the Haile Plantation neighborhood, this cafe is the kind of spot where the staff know their customers by name -- and their dogs names too. If you want to escape the feeling that you're in an extended university library, this is the place to go. The atmosphere is lively and warm. It's a family-friendly spot that's also good for casual business meetings. (Psst... they recently launched a new location at Tioga Town Center.)
You can get your coffee fix and indulge your sweet tooth at the same time here. The cupcakes are moist and the frosting is dense and smooth. They also serve breakfast wraps and paninis.
Our favorite espresso drink is the cortadito. The Cuban-inspired drink is shorter than a latte, the milk is creamy and not as frothy, and it packs just as much of a caffeine punch. The honey bee latte will also get you buzzing.
The windows of the café look out on a small park with a fountain and benches. They also have outdoor seating along the quaint brick sidewalks that make Haile Village so charming. The place fills up on weekends, so get there early if you want to stay and hang out.

The new kid on the block, Wyatt's set up shop behind the Hampton on Main Street in the heart of downtown Gainesville. This bright, airy café attracts a mix of students, tourists and a smattering of locals. Take a seat at one of the blond wood tables, crack open your laptop and transport yourself into coffee heaven.
Wyatt's espresso drinks are excellent, full stop. On any given day they offer at least two types of espresso beans sourced from different parts of the coffee-growing world, with notes on their flavor profiles. Their tea offerings come from Tebella, a solid loose leaf operation based in Tampa. The staff are always friendly and welcoming.
Seating can be pretty tight and the vibe is usually work-a-day. The decor is fashionably minimalist, a well thought out and Instagram-friendly blend of white tile, bold navy accents, and potted plants.
It's worth noting that Wyatt's is a Black and Latinx owned shop. Gabe and Aleena opened Wyatt's in 2018 with the firm belief that a loving and kind specialty coffee experience should be accessible to all people. And that's exactly what they've gone on to accomplish.
True to its Italian-inspired name, Volta does coffee with as much panache and care as they do in Europe, or at any great stateside third-wave coffee shop. In 2011 Complex magazine named Volta one of the best coffee shops in the United States. Since then a few cafes in Gainesville have caught up with them, but Volta still remains near the top of the heap.
The baristas here really know their stuff. They make a mean pour-over -- perfectly extracted and balanced -- and their espresso drinks are solid too. If you're not a total connoisseur you might not get all the fuss, but trust us, Volta goes the extra mile, and that attention to detail and sourcing shows in the quality of their drinks.
The atmosphere is open and airy, with an industrial vibe to the decor and furnishings. They offer a variety of seating options, from high tops to communal tables. A favorite of writers and their grad student entourages, it's quite possible that your tablemate is working on the next Great American novel (but is more likely grading papers). There's also plenty of outdoor seating on SW 2nd Street.
In terms of food options, the quiche is our go-to for a savory quick bite. Volta also carries a variety of decadent chocolates from around the world. Omnom from Iceland is one of our favorites. Volta is one of the only places you can find it on the shelf.
Quittin' time for the day? You're walking distance to Loosey's Bar and a string of great restaurants on SW 1st Ave, including Crame Ramen and Paramount Grill.

All right folks, one more and then we're really going to have to get back to work. We're totally jacked up right now.
From the big couches, the bean bags, and the cat that may occasionally grace you with its presence, CYM does a good job of making its customers feel at home. The building was literally a home before it became a cafe. One of the owners spent some time on the West Coast and wanted to recreate the laid back vibe of a cafe near the beach. The atmosphere is upbeat, the staff are welcoming and chatty, and they've nailed the laid back part, but alas, you'll have to use your imagination to smell the sea spray in the air and hear the surf breaking in the distance.
The coffee is definitely up to snuff, and they offer a dizzying range of flavors to choose from. The honey lavender latte is one of our favorites.
Being a little farther from the university, you wouldn't expect to find so many students here, though it never gets library quiet. And hey, they could have chosen to rent study space at the Starbucks instead of supporting this awesome local business.
Seating indoors is limited, so consider yourself lucky if you're able to snag a love seat. They make up for it with more seating on the wraparound porch, a peaceful spot for enjoying a cold brew or a craft brew on a warm day. CYM hosts live music some evenings outside on the lawn.
CYM is located just down the street from Cofrin Nature Park, if you're in the mood for a tranquil hike.
The fun and happiness of the holidays usually comes with more food, more gifts, more decor, and more stuff in general! I know that the holiday season can very easily leave you feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and burnt out, but it definitely doesn’t have to! We are sharing helpful ways to simplify your load and declutter before the holidays!
Declutter Toys
If you have kids in your home, it is never a bad idea to declutter their toys before the holidays. Assuming that your kids will most likely receive toys as gifts from friends and family, it's easier to make decisions about what toys aren’t being shown as much love or aren’t being played with anymore. With it being the holidays, it is a great time to encourage your kids to donate some of the toys that they don't use anymore to kids that are less fortunate than them.
Before you start decorating your home for Christmas, think about going through your current decor and getting rid of items that you are not in love with anymore. After this, you can move on to decluttering your holiday decor! One of the easiest ways to do this is to evaluate your decor while you are decorating and get rid of any unloved items as you go. This will make cleanup after the holidays much easier. If you have an issue with hanging on to items that you don’t necessarily need, try implementing space limits for storing your holiday decor. This boundary makes you less likely to hang on to useless decor or buy more unnecessary items during the after-holiday sales.
Clean Out the Refrigerator and Pantry
If you host holiday parties or just enjoy cooking and baking during the holiday season, you will most likely be needing space to store leftovers. Make your experience a little bit easier by simplifying and decluttering your kitchen before you start prepping for the holidays. Start by throwing anything out that has gone bad or that your household will not eat before it does. If you want to take it a step further, you can do a complete reset by taking the food out of the fridge and wiping down the shelves and drawers before putting everything back in. This will save you a lot of headaches when you're trying to stuff the spiral ham and mashed potatoes into the fridge after dinner!
Condense Your Wardrobe
Clothing items are a quintessential Christmas gift for all ages, and you will most likely be buying the kiddos new holiday outfits for photos and gatherings. This is a great time to condense your wardrobe and make room for the new items. Get rid of the clothes that you have been hanging onto for years and thought you were going to have the perfect outfit for, and donate or throw away the clothes that your kids have outgrown or worn out! This is also a great opportunity to see what your kids need to give family and friends gift ideas.
Declutter and Prepare Guest Linens
Along with hosting parties, many of us are also hosting family and friends over the holidays. A great way to prepare for your guests arrival is to look through guest towels and bedding and eliminate any worn out or unwanted linens. You may also want to air out or wash the linens that you will be using so they are nice and fresh for your guests!

Where is High Springs FL?
High Springs is a quaint little town located in north-central Florida. It’s close to Gainesville and Alachua, FL and is only a short drive from some of the state’s best beaches. The town has a population of just over 6,000 people and is known for its natural springs.
All Good Springs
When most people think of High Springs they think of Ginnie or Poe springs. These crystal clear springs stay 72 degrees year round. Need we say more?
The town is also home to a number of shops and restaurants. Our favorites are Headwaters, a modern update on the classical American diner, and Great Outdoors, an iconic steakhouse housed in a restored opera house. There are plenty of great watering holes to drink in too, including High Springs Brewing Company, a family-owned purveyor of hand-crafted beverages and a community hub.
There are a few great schools in the area, including the pre-K to 9 High Springs Community School and Santa Fe high school in neighboring Alachua, FL. Alachua County is one of the most consistently high-ranked public school systems in the state of Florida.

Fat Tuscan Cafe Making Brioche Breads
In this evening workshop, learn all about soft, tender Brioche Dough. The recipe being used is an original developed at the Fat Tuscan and is perfect for either savory or sweet breads. Learn to mix, knead, rise and shape dough to make an Onion Ricotta Brioche Roll & a Sweet Chocolate Chip Bun. Also, learn the ways to form and work with a wet sponge from yeast as well as the proper technique to stuff and form the breads with the assorted fillings. Treats for Troops: Treats for Troops is a Halloween Candy collection program, organized by Soldiers’ Angels, where local businesses accept extra Halloween candy from families in exchange for fun goodies! The businesses that choose to participate in this organization ship the candy that was collected to Soldiers’ Angels, and they make sure the candy gets to deployed service members and veterans to bring out their inner child and send them a small token of appreciation for all that they do and have done for our country!
Halloween Candy Buyback: The Halloween Candy Buyback program is very similar to Treats for Troops in which local businesses such as dental offices, gyms, churches, and schools collect excess Halloween candy and ship them to troops in exchange for cash, coupons, goods, and services.

Operation Shoebox: Operation Shoebox’s mission is to meet the needs of every hero with dignity and appreciation. They send between 350 and 400 care packages a week to troops deployed overseas, and in order to raise money for shipping costs, they have opened a used furniture store and thrift store with items donated by community members. To be included in these care packages, Operation Shoebox is accepting any and all types of candy that can be shipped to their address in Belleview FL.

Ronald McDonald House Charities: Ronald McDonald House Charities provide temporary housing, basic amenities, and support families with children receiving treatment at the Children’s Hospital. Join us for a spooktacular parkrun or parkwalk! Let’s try to break last year’s record shenanigans with everyone decked out for pre-Halloween fun! You will even be able to trick or treat at the scanning table! As a reminder the event begins promptly at 7:30 am. First timers are encouraged to come early to go over some helpful pointers. Featured in our Best Brewpubs of Gainesville, High Springs Brewery is giving you Trick or Treating fun for the whole family! Stop on by anytime starting at 5 pm on Monday, October 31st. They'll have candy stations where the kids can trick or treat and cold brewskies on tap for the adults to do some trick or treating of their own. Tony Dillas will be on site with their delicious quesadillas that the whole family can enjoy!

2. Micanopy's 47th Annual Fall Festival

3. BASH Music Festival featuring Mavis Staples and Drive-By Truckers
The BASH is Gainesville’s FREE music festival featuring national and local acts and showcasing hometown heritage through art, music tributes, food, libations, and family fun.
