Community Spotlight: Gainesville Hackerspace

Chris Hoffman graduated from the University of Florida in 2014 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering under his belt. He stuck around in our beautiful city of Gainesville, Florida after finding a job with a software development company, OPIE, and in his spare time occupies himself with project after project. His main hobby and passion is running a youtube channel, Hoffman Engineering, which details his journey into the world of 3D printing. With over 9,000 subscribers and 1.6 million views, you might say he really knows his stuff. He is also a determined cosplayer with the added skill of putting together props that really bring the characters to life.

3D Printing

His love for the pursuit of knowledge and technology has spilled over from being just hobbies to giving back to the community. Chris is a member of Gainesville Hackerspace, a not-for-profit organization that relies on its members to provide a community workshop for innovators of all walks of life to see the inner workings of their minds come to life. The organization wants to motivate and support Gainesville individuals who have the ideas but not necessarily the tools. Every Tuesday, starting at 7pm, they have an Open House and open their doors for the community to bring in projects they need help with. You can take advantage of their laser cutters, 3D printers, CnC Routers at the Downtown Gainesville Location. If you are a member ($35 for dues, $25 for students) you will gain 24/7 access to the space and tools and the North Location that has lathes, forges and welders.

Besides providing a space for people to work on projects, Gainesville Hackerspace hosts meetups and classes that can further your knowledge in various crafts. On November 9th, Chris Hoffman is hosting one such class at the Gainesville Hackerspace’s downtown Gainesville location. It will delve into the importance of the design aspect to 3D printing.
